ASIC Launches First Whole‑Institution AI Quality Assurance Framework for Global Education

Across five interlocking resources, the new AI-QA Leadership Resource materials equip boards, leaders, QA teams, and practitioners with the tools to evidence responsible AI use, strengthen governance, and prepare for future inspection expectations.

ASIC has released a pioneering suite of free AI‑QA resources that recognises a fundamental shift in global education: artificial intelligence is no longer a future concern but an established part of everyday institutional operations. Rather than adding a separate AI requirement, ASIC has embedded AI considerations throughout its existing accreditation framework, reflecting how AI now shapes teaching, assessment, welfare, operations, marketing, and governance.

Why This Matters for the Sector

Institutions across international education are seeking practical ways to create workable AI policies, gather defensible evidence, and protect academic integrity without disadvantaging students. The new AI‑QA Leadership in Education suite offers a structured starting point for institutions at any stage of readiness, helping them navigate AI with confidence and clarity.

A Holistic Approach

Artificial intelligence already influences academic processes, operational systems, and decision‑making across institutions. Treating it as an isolated concern risks overlooking its impact on every aspect of quality assurance. ASIC has therefore mapped AI considerations across all Areas of Operation, ensuring institutions can see exactly where AI intersects with governance, teaching, assessment, welfare, marketing, data protection, and operations. This approach enables providers to recognise existing strengths, identify genuine gaps, and plan proportionate improvement.

A Resource Suite Designed for the Whole Institution

The suite consists of five interlocking resources designed to support every level of an institution. Leadership briefs provide boards and senior executives with clear oversight responsibilities and essential governance questions. A strategic maturity grid helps senior leaders assess their current position and plan next steps. The comprehensive QA handbook offers practical tools, templates, and mapped processes for quality teams. A practitioner guide supports teachers, learning technologists, and student support teams in navigating real‑world scenarios. UK and international standards mappings show how AI considerations align with inspection expectations across different provider types and regulatory contexts.

Shared Themes for AI-QA Best Practice

Across the suite, several themes stand out. Academic integrity is increasingly spectrum‑based, requiring assessment design that remains valid across varied forms of AI use. Data protection obligations (including DPIAs or their international equivalents) must be met for every AI tool an institution uses. Workforce capability is now a governance concern, and AI‑related CPD must be purposeful, role‑specific, and evaluated. Finally, a governed AI incident log is an essential mechanism for organisational learning and responsible oversight.

What This Means for ASIC Institutions

These resources are developmental tools designed to support preparedness (not new inspection requirements at this time). Inspectors will look for intentional, documented, and improving practice: clear and current policies, transparent assessment design, sound data protection processes, meaningful staff development, and fair, well‑communicated student guidance. Institutions that use the new materials to review their current position and strengthen governance will be well placed as AI‑related considerations become more integrated into inspection processes.

Sector‑Wide Impact

All resources have been released openly to support collaboration across the international education sector. AI governance is a shared challenge, and ASIC’s framework offers a holistic, principles‑based approach adaptable to diverse contexts and institutional types.

Next Steps and Access

ASIC will now consult with leaders, QA professionals, practitioners, technologists, and governance experts to refine the resources. Following consultation, AI‑QA considerations will be integrated into inspector training and subsequently embedded across the accreditation process.

The full resource suite is available via the ASIC QA Resource library.
