ASIC International Conference – Kuala Lumpur 2017

This year is the 10th anniversary of ASIC and what better way to celebrate this milestone than with our first International Conference which was held on 20-21 September 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where we were delighted to welcome 160 delegates from over 30 countries.

Day 1

The first day of the conference included presentations from our conference sponsors and industry experts on ‘The way forward of Higher Education’, Student Mobility and Partnership Development, and International Accreditation, with ASIC introducing our new Internationalisation Index.

A very informative presentation was also given by Prof Sultan Abu-Orabi, Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities, along with a signing ceremony. ASIC and the AARU signed a Memorandum of Co-operation for the purpose of forging and building international education relationships between higher education institutions based in the MENA regions and other institutions worldwide.

10th Anniversary Awards Dinner

On the evening, we held our 10th Anniversary Awards Dinner, which was an evening highlighting excellence in international education. The evening started with a welcome ceremony and fantastic choir from Limkokwing University before being entertained by award-winning violinist Julian Lee.

The atmosphere and food were outstanding during the dinner and Awards were presented to ASIC institutions who had demonstrated an outstanding contribution to international education. The awards ceremony culminated in special achievement awards to Dr. Mohammad H. Nekoofar of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Prof Sultan Abu-Orabi, Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities. A special fellowship award was also presented to Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Wira Dr. Mohd Shukri Ab Yajid to celebrate his dedication to quality education and for achieving QS 5 star.

Day 2

The second day started much like the first with plenty of early interaction and networking taking place. There were presentations from IVETA (International Vocational Education and Training Association), International Academic and Management Association – IAMA, Retail Training Professionals (RTP) and Pro Coach Yorkshire Cricket Academy. The latter even teaching our 160 strong crowd how to bowl leg-spin and a googly.

ASIC also spoke about our new Platinum accreditation which will be introduced soon and the standards by which institutions will be graded against for this level of institutional accreditation. There was also an opportunity for institutions to get together and network in smaller groups, which from the feedback received so far, was a very popular part of the conference and has seen several institutions get together following the conference to discuss ways of working together further.

Late afternoon included a familiarisation trip to one of our premier accredited institutions and main sponsor, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Cyberjaya. Our delegates were greeted with a warm welcome and signing ceremony, followed by a tour of the campus and facilities on offer to their students.

Thank you

We really did manage to fit a lot into the two days and we would like to congratulate the delegates who attended on their professionalism and work ethic to make this such a fantastic conference.

A big thank you should also go to all the ASIC staff who were both present at the conference and those who remained back at the office in the UK, who dedicated so much of their time and effort to make this event run as smoothly and as successfully as it did.

Moving ahead

So, following the success of our first international conference, here at ASIC we are well underway with plans for future conferences in 2018.

Early in the New Year ASIC will be partnering with Pro Coach Yorkshire Cricket Academy to run a joint conference in Dubai. This will be an exciting opportunity for institutions to benefit from working with one of the most well-known cricket clubs in the world. We also plan to hold another international conference in Jamaica later in 2018.

Here in the UK, you will be aware that by May 2018, businesses need to be prepared for one of the biggest changes in data protection history. The General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) will be introduced and ASIC will be hosting a joint seminar on this vital topic.
