What is the Living Wage?
The Living Wage campaign is an independent movement of businesses, organisations and people. The real Living Wage provides an ethical benchmark for responsible pay. Accredited employers choose to pay the real Living Wage voluntarily – they recognise that “a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.” Read more on the Living Wage Foundation’s website.
Why has ASIC become a Living Wage employer?
We champion equality in education and there are many ways in which we walk in the values that we wish to see exemplified in our institutions. We have fair recruitment practices, flexible/home working policies, and believe that all members of our team are important to the work we do. We have always paid fair wages but crucially becoming an accredited employer means:
- The Living Wage not only applies to all our staff but also to all third-party contractors. We will pay anyone who provides services such as catering or cleaning at ASIC House the real Living Wage.
- We are making a demonstrable commitment to a cause we care about – to encourage others to do the same. In the education sector, a worrying elitism often exists with regards to which jobs are ‘valued’ more than others. This attitude often extends to the inadequate wages paid to administration and support staff. We know that ALL members of our team are crucial to our operation. We stand in solidarity with the Living Wage Foundation, and other Living Wage employers, who recognise that “a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.”
Paying the real Living Wage can make your organisation an attractive place to work, with a positive impact on staff motivation, recruitment, and retention. Beyond this, supporting the campaign can make a wider difference in our society. It makes a statement about the value placed on individuals and their job titles. No role is unworthy of a fair day’s pay.
What can my organisation do to help?
The Living Wage Foundation report that nearly a quarter of the UK workforce (1 in 5 employees) earn below the Living Wage. In the UK, in 2019, poverty is still a real issue and this affects many in insecure and low-paid work; two-thirds of children in poverty have a parent in work.
